Before you learn how to draw a Cute Teddy Bear, did you know?
The name Teddy comes from former US president Theodore Roosevelt who was often called Teddy.
The president was on a hunting trip and hadn’t killed a bear so some other men caught a bear and tied it to a tree for him to shoot. He refused and the incident was portrayed in a cartoon at the time. Although the original cartoon showed a large bear, future renditions of the drawing made the animal smaller and cuter and the first Teddy Bear was created soon after.
Around the same time over in Germany, the Steiff company who was completely unaware of the Teddy Bear being produced in the US, designed a stuffed bear also.
Although Germany and the US were both producing teddy bears at the same time, they would not have known of each other’s creations due to difficult transatlantic communication in those days.
The early teddy bears were made to look more like real bears. They had longer snouts and round beady eyes. The teddy bears of today have much larger eyes and smaller noses with cuter features which make them so lovable. Of course, teddy bears are also made as various bear species such as grizzlies, polar bears and pandas – as well as Australia’s koala bear which is actually not a bear at all although that is what it is commonly called.
Teddy bears sell in their millions each year and especially on February 14th when the lovers of the world celebrate Valentine’s Day.
